Hazel Clancy sniffed more of the delicious white powder up her nose, allowing the sensation to flow directly into her brain. Wow! That was so good. She giggled and went into her bedroom, falling onto the bed. She had to get straight. She had to work tomorrow. She couldn’t afford to miss any more days like this. She needed to keep up the impression.

She closed her eyes, letting herself float on the fumes of euphoria.

A noise.

Was that the apartment door opening? No one had a key. That’s weird, she thought, unable to keep her eyes open.

Then … footsteps creeping softly across the floor.

‘Hello?’ She tried to get up but was too high to move. Eyelids drooping once again. Was that a spider web falling across the bed? Forcing her eyes open, she tried to look around.

The doorway darkened. Something reflected in the mirror. A light? Or a shadow? It moved, didn’t it? Was the shadow actually someone standing there?

‘Wha …? Who …?’ She couldn’t form a sentence.

The shadow moved closer. One step at a time. And stopped at the edge of the bed.

With great effort, Hazel got an elbow under her body. Tried to sit up. To move. She wanted to be frightened but she couldn’t muster that emotion. She felt herself smiling, though nothing was funny. No message would go to her brain to tell it to be fearful.

A bottle. Held to her lips.

A hand across her nose, forcing her head into the pillow.

The liquid trickled down her throat.
